Ligue 1 TV rights: DAZN "ready to invest around one hundred million euros" in the new channel envisaged by the LFP

The British platform, which will broadcast Ligue 1 for the 2024-2025 season, wishes to continue working with the LFP in the creation of its new channel, reports the daily L'Equipe.

New development in the Ligue 1 TV rights crisis? In statements quoted by L'Equipe on Wednesday, April 30, the British platform DAZN, broadcaster of Ligue 1 for the 2024-2025 season , confirmed the existence of an " option to exit the contract that binds [it] to the League, because it wants to launch its channel project", while the presidents of Ligue 1 clubs voted in favor of an exit from this contract at the end of this season.

A spokesperson for the British company also announced that it is ready to support the channel project launched by the Professional Football League (LFP) to broadcast the championship: "Coming to France, losing money and stopping after a year does not make much sense. We are convinced that we can bring great added value to the League as part of this channel project."

The platform is ready "to invest around a hundred million euros for this channel." But this offer will have to be accepted by the LFP. "The League may have other options, even if we believe that the right decision would be to go ahead with this channel project with DAZN," explains the platform, which has viewed "with a positive eye the arrival of Nicolas de Tavernost" as general director of LFP Media , the commercial company of the Professional Football League.

DAZN and the LFP have been at odds for several months , and the conciliation before the Paris Economic Activities Court has failed to resolve the dispute between the two parties in court. On April 15, the presidents of the Ligue 1 clubs decided to terminate the contract between the LFP and the British broadcaster at the end of the season. This decision was subsequently validated by a vote of the LFP's board of directors. However, the broadcaster refused the financial terms of termination of the contract proposed by the mediator.

DAZN still has two installments to pay on April 30 and June 30, for a total amount of €140 million, according to the terms of the contract that binds the LFP and DAZN until 2029, with another €1.5 billion to be paid.
The British broadcaster has an exit clause at the end of the 2025-2026 season, which can be activated if DAZN had fewer than 1.5 million subscribers in December 2025. However, the number of subscribers currently stands at around 700,000 . While the current contract will soon be a thing of the past, this does not necessarily mean the end of the collaboration between French professional football and DAZN.
